What is the YMCA ReCranked recycle Program?

ReCranked is a Ballarat YMCA initiative that aims to give bikes back to the community.

The YMCA ReCranked Centre specialises in giving unwanted bikes new riders. We take old, unwanted, unused, broken or forgotten about bikes and revamp them into safe and serious modes of transport, for those without wheels.

In our workshop, donated bikes are given a complete overhaul by our staff, program volunteers and young people. They are given to very worthy recipients, with the new owners also receiving first-hand knowledge on how to care for their new bikes, to ensure a lasting and happy friendship.

Why is ReCranked an important community program?

Having a way to get around is so important for anyone, especially young people and to be able to deliver practically new bikes to people in the local community is a realistic way to help improve transport options for Ballarat residents.

ReCranked bikes are also used in local school Bike Education Programs and some have been sent overseas to countries such as Cambodia, Liberia and Namibia.

What can I do to help?

  • Bring in your old, unused or broken bike for us to recycle.
  • Donate your talents to our workshop.
  • Become a Re-cranked Volunteer.

Above all else, tell people about this program and the difference it makes.

What’s a ReCranked Volunteer?

Volunteers are most welcome and the YMCA will run regular recruitment sessions that people can attend to learn more about what’s involved.

All new adult ReCrankers (18+) will be interviewed and if recruited, be required to undergo a full induction run by the YMCA. This includes having a Working With Children Check. Once this is all done and signed off, you’ll become a fully-fledged ReCranker!

When did ReCranked begin?

Ballarat YMCA, together with the City of Ballarat and Department of Planning and Community Development officially launched the YMCA ReCranked Recycles Program; a community program specialising in giving unwanted bikes new riders.

The Program was launched in April 2013, with the presentation of the YMCA’s first 15 newly recycled bikes to local community agencies, who found new owners from within the Ballarat area. In just three years, the Program had already recycled its 500th bike!
